Leading worship in a dying church

Is worship as important in a dying church as in a thriving church? Should the focus of the church that is in its last days be worship, or finding a way to survive? Perhaps they go hand in hand. I am a part of a church that has been limping along for the past 5 years, I have only been there 15 months, and things have only improved in the youth area. For a long time I led worship, and I often wondered, are my talents and abilities being utilized to the greatest extent here, when I could be helping to cast a new vision, create new plans and try to resurrect this dying church? But I was hit with a realization . . . actually the guitar next to my desk fell and hit my leg, anyway. Continue Reading…

The training of young worship leaders…how we can do more

Growing up in the church I had great opportunity to glean and learn how to identify the giftings God had given me and begin the journey of shaping and growing them for His pleasure. My journey took shape through music and it became clear very quickly that the music that brought me joy was that which brought a smile to God’s face. From junior high through college I sought out those opportunities to learn what true worship is and struggle through the question of what God wanted from me in this area. At times I felt that there was ample guidance from my church, while at others I felt that it could have done more to train and encourage me in my journey. Continue Reading…

The Not So Obvious Worship Leader: How is an instrumentalist a worship leader?

Early in ministry I often wondered, being solely an instrumentalist and an instrumental music director in our church, how I was a worship leader. What role did I play in leading worship? How good of a spiritual leader was I? I felt woefully un-gifted in some of these areas, yet highly gifted in others that pertained to my job – many that were less visible. Over the years God and others helped me figure out a lot of those questions and I grew to find good balance. Continue Reading…

Sound Guy As A Worship Leader? Bah!

Many, I know, would scoff at the idea of the sound guy as being a worship leader. Several worship leaders I have known simply cannot envision this concept. They view the role of the sound mixer as being a servant to the band, a minister with the gift of helps - and geeky knowledge of sound.

Thing is, though, worship leading is mostly a black and white job. You (presumably) schedule the musicians, pick the song selection, the song order, manage conflicts and the run the rehearsal, which is the same thing, really. Continue Reading…

Do you feel good about being a worship leader in a smaller church?

Gary Durbin is a worship leader I met at a conference earlier this year. Over at his blog he shares the following:

Most worship leaders are not in huge churches. Most worship leaders do not have big budgets, paid sound team members, paid musicians, and some are not even paid themselves. So, I have to remember, as the song says, “There must be more than this…”.

What is your experience with leading worship?  I personally have led in small churches and in huge churches in the past years.  Do you relate to what Gary is saying?
